A Theoretical Investigation into the Relationship Between Platform Algorithms and Democratic Communication in Nigeria

The algorithmic curation systems of major social media platforms shape what political and civic information Nigerian citizens encounter in ways that have profound implications for democratic communication, yet a theoretical framework adequate to analysing this relationship in the Nigerian institutional and political context is absent from communication arts scholarship. This study conducted an original theoretical investigation into the relationship between platform algorithms and democratic communication in Nigeria. A constructive theoretical methodology was employed, drawing on critical platform studies, democratic communication theory, political economy of media, and African digital democracy scholarship. Three theoretical pillars were developed through critical synthesis: the Algorithmic Public Sphere Model (examining how filter bubbles reshape the conditions of democratic deliberation in Nigeria's fragmented ethnic-linguistic public sphere), a Political Economy of Nigerian Platform Governance analysis (examining power asymmetries between global platform corporations and Nigerian regulatory institutions), and a Contextual Algorithm Effect typology (classifying how algorithmic curation produces different democratic communication consequences in urban elite, urban popular, and rural Nigerian digital contexts). Original theoretical contributions include the concept of algorithmic ethnic amplification, describing how engagement optimisation disproportionately spreads ethnically inflammatory content in multi-ethnic information environments, and the theory of regulatory sovereignty deficit, describing structural limitations on Nigerian state authority to govern platform communication in the public interest. The framework was submitted to critical review by eighteen communication scholars from Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and the United Kingdom, with significant consensus on its theoretical originality and policy relevance.
