📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Agro-processing represents a critical bridge between primary agricultural production and manufactured food products, offering a pathway to value addition, employment creation, and agricultural sector transformation. This study investigates the constraints and opportunities confronting agro-processing investment and value addition in Imo State from 2020 to 2024, focusing on the cassava, palm oil, and fish processing sub-sectors. The study is theoretically anchored on the Agricultural Transformation Theory, which posits that sustained structural economic change requires the shift from raw commodity production toward value-added agro-industrial activity as a foundation for rural industrialization. A survey research design was employed, targeting agro-processing enterprises registered with the Imo State Agribusiness Development Agency. From a population of 620 agro-processing firms, a sample of 240 respondents was drawn using stratified random sampling. Structured questionnaires and investment records constituted the data instruments. Findings reveal that processing capacity utilization averaged only 41 percent among surveyed firms due to inadequate power supply, outdated processing equipment, and high raw material transportation costs. Despite these constraints, firms that achieved scale in agro-processing reported average profit margins of 22 percent, indicating substantial commercial viability. The study concludes that agro-processing in Imo State holds considerable value addition potential constrained by infrastructure and financing gaps. It is recommended that the state government establish an agro-processing industrial park with guaranteed power supply, shared equipment facilities, and dedicated agribusiness financing windows for small-scale processors.
