The Economic Impact of Artisanal Mining on Community Development in Imo State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Artisanal mining constitutes a significant informal economic activity in many Nigerian states, providing livelihoods for thousands while simultaneously generating environmental and governance challenges that affect broader community welfare. This study examines the economic impact of artisanal mining activities on community development outcomes in Imo State from 2020 to 2024, focusing on communities in Ohaji-Egbema and Oguta LGAs. The study is anchored on the Resource Curse Theory, which suggests that resource-rich communities paradoxically experience weaker economic development when natural resource extraction is poorly managed and generates limited local developmental benefits. A survey research design was adopted, targeting artisanal miners, community residents, and local government development officers. From an estimated population of 12,000 individuals directly and indirectly affected by artisanal mining, a sample of 378 respondents was drawn using stratified random sampling. Structured questionnaires and community asset inventories served as instruments. Findings indicate that artisanal mining generated average annual incomes of 180,000 to 420,000 naira for direct participants, significantly above the state rural average. However, community infrastructure, water quality, and agricultural land in mining areas showed marked deterioration, suggesting net negative externalities at the community level. The study concludes that artisanal mining in Imo State presents a dual economic reality: individual income gains accompanied by collective community development losses. It is recommended that the state government formalize artisanal mining operations through a licensing framework that mandates community development levies and environmental restoration contributions.
