An Analytical Study of Traditional Conflict Resolution Mechanisms and Their Effectiveness in Ogoni Communities, Rivers State

Traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Nigerian ethnic communities are frequently lauded for their cultural legitimacy, accessibility, and restorative dimensions, yet systematic analytical evidence for their effectiveness in contemporary conflict contexts is sparse. This study analytically examines traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in Ogoni communities, Rivers State, South South Nigeria, assessing their contemporary effectiveness in managing land, family, and inter-community disputes. A sequential mixed-methods design was employed, with structured surveys measuring dispute resolution satisfaction and outcome durability administered to 260 community members who had utilised traditional mechanisms within five years, followed by twenty semi-structured interviews with disputants, community leaders, and legal practitioners. The Restorative Justice framework was applied analytically. Results indicate that disputant satisfaction with traditional resolution processes was high at 74%, compared to 38% for those who utilised formal magistrate courts, reflecting procedural justice advantages. Outcome durability, measured by absence of recurrence within two years, was 61% for traditional mechanisms compared to 55% for court orders, suggesting comparable durability with superior satisfaction. However, traditional mechanisms demonstrated gender equity deficits, with women reporting substantially less voice in proceedings and outcomes in 67% of female respondent cases. Land disputes involving petroleum company interests were beyond the effective scope of traditional mechanisms in all analyzed cases. Recommendations include hybrid dispute resolution models that integrate traditional legitimacy with gender equity safeguards and formal legal backstops for high-stakes land conflicts in Ogoni territory.
