An Evaluation of Choir Training Methods in Pentecostal Churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State

This study evaluates the choir training methods employed in selected Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, South South Nigeria. Church choirs in Nigerian Pentecostal congregations function as central pillars of worship and have grown in musical sophistication, incorporating gospel, contemporary Christian music, and Afrobeats-influenced sounds. However, the extent to which choir directors employ structured, pedagogically sound training methods remains largely unstudied. This research investigates rehearsal structures, sight-reading instruction, vocal technique coaching, and the use of musical notation among choirs in ten selected large Pentecostal churches in Port Harcourt. A descriptive survey design is employed, with data collected through structured questionnaires and observation checklists administered to choir directors and choristers. The study further examines the educational backgrounds of choir directors and the relationship between formal music training and choir performance quality. Theoretical grounding is drawn from choral pedagogy literature and recent studies on music education within faith communities in West Africa. Findings are expected to highlight significant gaps between best-practice choral training and current church choir rehearsal approaches. Recommendations will address the need for formal music education among choir directors and the value of institutional partnerships between churches and university music departments.
