An Original Examination of Cooperative Economics as a Framework for Addressing Nigeria’s Informal Sector Employment Problem

Nigeria's informal sector employs approximately 80 percent of the working population outside the protections of labour law, social security, and formal institutional support. Cooperative economics, with its theoretical emphasis on collective self-help, democratic economic participation, and social embeddedness, represents a potentially powerful but undertheorised framework for addressing the structural conditions of informal sector employment in Nigeria. This study conducted an original theoretical and empirical examination of cooperative economics as a framework for addressing informal sector employment challenges in Nigeria. A theory-building and empirical validation methodology was employed. The theoretical analysis critically engaged the cooperative economics literature, labour economics frameworks (particularly segmented labour market theory and human capital theory), and Nigeria-specific informal economy scholarship, to identify the theoretical channels through which cooperative membership can improve the quality and security of informal sector employment. An empirical validation study was then conducted with 400 informal sector workers (200 cooperative members and 200 non-members) from four informal economy sectors (street vending, artisanal production, domestic services, and transport) in Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Rivers States. The validation study assessed the theoretical channels through measurement of income stability, social protection access, skill development, and collective bargaining experience. Results confirmed five of the seven theorised channels, with strongest empirical support for the income stabilisation and collective bargaining pathways. An original Cooperative Informal Employment Improvement Model (CIEI) is developed, providing a structured institutional economic framework applicable to cooperative and labour policy design for informal workers.
