An Original Investigation into the Ethics of Representation in Contemporary Nigerian Documentary Photography

Documentary photography of Nigerian social conditions, particularly of poverty, conflict, and cultural vulnerability, raises fundamental ethical questions about the photographer-subject power relationship, the purposes for which photographic images of Nigerian communities are produced, and the consequences of their circulation in domestic and international media, and an original ethical theoretical investigation of these questions constitutes an important contribution to both photography ethics and postcolonial visual culture theory. This study conducted an original theoretical and empirical investigation into the ethics of representation in contemporary Nigerian documentary photography. A research ethics and visual culture theoretical methodology was employed, combining theoretical analysis of photography ethics frameworks (Sontag, Azoulay, Möller, and postcolonial visual culture theory), systematic content analysis of 80 documentary photograph publications featuring Nigerian subjects from five major international and Nigerian publications, and structured interviews with 25 documentary photographers, 10 photo editors, and 12 photo-ethics scholars. Theoretical analysis identified the inadequacy of consent-based ethics frameworks for addressing the complex power asymmetries in Nigerian documentary photography, particularly where subjects are politically or economically vulnerable. Content analysis revealed systematic patterns in which Nigerian subjects are photographed as victims, spectacles, or exotic subjects in international publications, while domestic Nigerian publications show more diverse representation. The original Nigerian Documentary Photography Ethics Framework proposes six ethical principles: community benefit priority, subject agency preservation, contextual integrity, anti-spectacle restraint, archival responsibility, and post-publication accountability. Each principle is operationalised with specific decision criteria and practical guidance. Expert review confirmed the framework's original ethical and theoretical contributions.
