An Original Longitudinal Study of the Creative Development Trajectories of Nigerian Visual Artists

Creative development in professional artistic practice is a longitudinal process whose patterns, turning points, and trajectory types have been extensively studied in Western art historical and psychological contexts but remain empirically uncharacterised for Nigerian visual artists, representing an important gap in both creative arts and developmental studies scholarship. This study conducted an original longitudinal investigation of creative development trajectories among Nigerian visual artists across a ten-year retrospective period. A biographical research methodology employing creative biography construction was adopted, with in-depth biographical interviews conducted with 40 Nigerian visual artists drawn from all six geopolitical zones and across four generational cohorts. The biographical interviews traced each artist's creative development from earliest artistic activity through formal and informal training, career establishment, and current practice. Constant comparative analysis across 40 biographies generated trajectory typologies and identified critical development mechanisms. The study identified four primary creative development trajectory types among Nigerian artists: institutional trajectory (development organised through formal university arts education followed by gallery representation), community apprenticeship trajectory (development through extended mentorship with a master artist within a traditional craft community), self-taught digital trajectory (development through digital self-teaching, social media feedback, and online community), and hybrid diaspora trajectory (development through formal international training followed by return and cultural re-engagement). An original Creative Development Mechanism Model identified the five factors most consistently associated with trajectory advancement: mentor access quality, exhibition opportunity density, conceptual crisis resolution, cultural identity anchoring, and market validation sequencing. Expert review confirmed the study's original longitudinal and typological contributions.
