Analysis of Crime Rate Statistics in Kaduna State Using Official Police Report Data

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Crime rate patterns in Kaduna State, North West Nigeria, are shaped by complex interactions between urban growth, youth unemployment, and ethno-religious tensions that quantitative analysis of official police records can partially illuminate at the state level. This study analyses crime rate statistics in Kaduna State using official Nigeria Police Force reports for the period 2017 to 2022. Data on reported crime counts disaggregated by crime category, local government area, and year were obtained from the Kaduna State Police Command. Statistical methods include trend analysis, crime rate computation per 100,000 population, spatial distribution mapping, and chi-square tests for association between crime category and LGA classification. The overall crime rate averaged 312 per 100,000 population over the study period with a peak in 2021 (348 per 100,000). Violent crimes (assault, armed robbery, and kidnapping) constituted 41 percent of all reported crimes. Theft and burglary accounted for 29 percent. Kaduna South LGA recorded the highest crime rate, while rural agricultural LGAs showed predominantly property crime patterns. A statistically significant increasing trend in kidnapping was observed (Kendall's tau = 0.73, p = 0.023). Year-on-year crime rate differences were significant by ANOVA (F = 6.21, p = 0.002). The study provides a statistical crime profile for Kaduna State and recommends community policing intensification in high-crime LGAs and longitudinal tracking of kidnapping trends for security policy planning.
