Analysis of Dropout Rates in Vocational Technical Colleges in Ondo State

This study analyses the factors contributing to dropout rates in vocational technical colleges in Ondo State, South West Nigeria. Student attrition in technical colleges undermines national goals for skilled workforce development and represents a significant loss of educational investment. While dropout rates have been documented at the secondary school level, specific data on technical college attrition in Ondo State remain sparse. The study employs a descriptive survey design combined with records analysis. Participants include 150 currently enrolled students, 50 students who dropped out within the past three years, and 40 administrators from six vocational technical colleges in Akure, Ondo, and Ikare local government areas. Instruments include structured questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. Data are analysed using thematic analysis for qualitative data and descriptive statistics for quantitative responses. The study anticipates that financial hardship, poor learning environment, peer influence, and mismatch between programme content and career aspirations are the dominant dropout triggers. Gender and residential location are also examined as moderating variables. Recommendations include student bursary schemes, improved student welfare services, and strengthened academic advising at enrolment. The study calls for a longitudinal tracking system for vocational college students to enable early identification of at-risk individuals. Findings will inform Ondo State technical education administration and contribute to national retention strategy development for vocational and technical education.
