Analysis of Road Transport Cooperative Societies and Their Role in Improving Operator Welfare in Ondo State

Transport cooperative societies represent a collective approach to addressing the economic vulnerabilities of individual commercial vehicle operators, offering access to credit, insurance, and collective bargaining advantages. This study analyses the structure, activities, and welfare contribution of road transport cooperative societies in Ondo State, located in the South West geopolitical zone. A professional survey design was employed, with data collected from 120 cooperative members and 15 cooperative management officials in Akure, Ondo City, and Owo through structured questionnaires and financial record analysis. The study evaluates membership profiles, capital mobilisation practices, credit access facilitation, group insurance uptake, and member welfare outcomes compared to non-cooperative operators. Findings show that cooperative members demonstrate higher rates of vehicle maintenance compliance, lower incidence of financial distress during vehicle breakdown, and greater access to micro-credit for fleet renewal compared to non-members. However, cooperative governance is characterised by low participation in decision-making by ordinary members and occasional misappropriation of cooperative funds by executives. Female operator participation in cooperatives is particularly low at 11 percent. The study recommends governance reform through mandatory member representation on cooperative boards, financial literacy training for members, and state government facilitation of cooperative access to formal banking sector credit products. These findings advance professional knowledge on the role of cooperative institutions in strengthening the transport sector in South West Nigeria.
