Analysis of Tour Guiding Standards and Professional Development in Osun State, South West Nigeria

This study analyses tour guiding standards and professional development frameworks in Osun State, South West Nigeria, with a focus on guides operating at the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, Olumo Rock extension tours, and Yoruba heritage circuits. Tour guides are critical mediators of the visitor experience and represent the human face of destination tourism brands, yet their professional development and standard supervision in Nigeria remain inconsistently managed. A mixed-method research design is employed with questionnaires administered to 80 licensed and unlicensed tour guides and structured interviews conducted with officials from the Osun State Tourism Board and the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism. Dimensions assessed include guide training levels, language competencies, historical knowledge accuracy, customer service skills, and awareness of professional guiding codes of conduct. Findings reveal that only 44 percent of active guides in the study area hold any formal guiding certification, with the majority having acquired knowledge informally through personal experience and community transmission. Knowledge gaps in historical interpretation accuracy and handling diverse tourist nationalities are noted. The study recommends establishment of a state-accredited tour guide training and licensing curriculum, mandatory continuing professional development for registered guides, and creation of a Osun State Tour Guides Association to coordinate professional standards.
