📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study assesses the destination brand management strategies employed for Calabar as a cultural tourism city in Cross River State, South South Nigeria. Calabar has invested significantly in cultural tourism branding, primarily anchored by the Calabar December Carnival, and has positioned itself as a year-round tourism destination. Yet the coherence, effectiveness, and stakeholder alignment of this branding effort warrant systematic evaluation. A mixed-method research design is adopted with questionnaires administered to 150 domestic tourists and structured interviews conducted with Cross River State Tourism Bureau officials, event organizers, hotel marketers, and community cultural leaders. Brand management dimensions assessed include brand identity clarity, consistency of brand messaging across channels, stakeholder alignment with the destination brand, perceived brand differentiation, and visitor brand recall levels. Findings reveal that the December Carnival is successfully anchored as Calabar's primary brand asset, recalled positively by 89 percent of tourists. However, off-season brand coherence is weak, with 67 percent of visitors unable to articulate a clear year-round tourism proposition for Calabar beyond the carnival. Stakeholder alignment around the brand is fragmented, with different entities communicating inconsistent destination attributes. The study recommends development of a unified Calabar Destination Brand Strategy document, appointment of a dedicated destination brand manager within the state tourism bureau, and a consistent multi-platform content calendar for year-round tourism promotion.
