Analytical Study of the Influence of Colonial-Era Architecture on Contemporary Nigerian Built Environment Aesthetics

The aesthetic influence of colonial-era architecture on contemporary Nigerian built environment design represents an underexplored dimension of postcolonial visual culture, and analytical examination of this influence across different architectural typologies and geographic zones provides important insight into the contested aesthetics of Nigerian urbanism. This study analytically examined the influence of colonial-era architectural aesthetics on contemporary Nigerian built environment design, focusing on selected cities in the South West, South South, and North Central zones. A comparative architectural analysis methodology was employed, documenting 120 colonial-era structures across Lagos, Calabar, and Abuja and analysing their formal characteristics including building materials, spatial organisation, ornamental systems, facade proportions, and functional programming. A subsequent analysis of 120 contemporary Nigerian buildings across the same cities identified aesthetic borrowings, reactions against, and hybrid expressions of colonial architectural vocabulary. Structured interviews with 15 architects practising in the three cities supplemented visual analysis. Results showed a complex reception history in which colonial aesthetic features including verandah structures, louvred windows, and imported masonry materials are simultaneously deployed nostalgically, rejected ideologically, and adapted pragmatically. Post-independence state architecture has been particularly ambivalent, with official buildings often mimicking colonial administrative aesthetics even in post-civil-rights contexts. Contemporary architect respondents described increasing client demand for hybrid designs that reference colonial grace while expressing contemporary Nigerian identity. The study contributes an original analytical framework for understanding colonial aesthetic inheritance in the Nigerian built environment.
