Analytical Study of the Use of Traditional Nigerian Visual Aesthetics in Contemporary Brand Identity Design

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The incorporation of indigenous Nigerian visual aesthetics into contemporary brand identity design represents a creative arts and commercial design intersection that has received limited analytical scholarly attention, despite the obvious relevance for Nigeria's growing creative industries and brand positioning discourse. This study analytically examined the use of traditional Nigerian visual aesthetics in contemporary brand identity design across five sectors: banking, fast-moving consumer goods, telecommunications, cultural events, and public sector institutions. A systematic content analysis was applied to a corpus of 90 brand identity systems (18 per sector) produced by Nigerian brands in the period 2020 to 2023, supplemented by structured interviews with 20 professional graphic designers responsible for brand identity work in Lagos and Abuja. Brand identities were assessed for the presence of traditional aesthetic references including Adire textile patterns, Uli geometric systems, Yoruba/Igbo/Hausa iconographic elements, traditional colour conventions, and indigenous typographic inspirations. Results showed that traditional aesthetic referencing was most prevalent in cultural events and public sector contexts (67 and 61 percent respectively) and least prevalent in banking and telecommunications (11 and 13 percent respectively), indicating a clear commercial sector hesitancy. Designer interview analysis attributed this hesitancy to client concerns about appearing ethnically exclusive and preference for internationally legible design conventions. The study identifies a cultural identity opportunity gap in Nigerian commercial branding and recommends design education reform and client communication frameworks to increase confident deployment of indigenous aesthetics in commercial identity design.
