Application of Green Chemistry Principles in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing: A Case Study of a Drug Firm in Lagos, South West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Green chemistry principles offer pharmaceutical manufacturers a framework for reducing hazardous reagent use, minimising waste generation, and improving process energy efficiency while maintaining product quality and regulatory compliance. This study evaluates the extent of green chemistry principle adoption in a selected pharmaceutical manufacturing firm in Lagos State, South West Nigeria, using a structured audit methodology aligned with the twelve principles of green chemistry. Data are collected through direct facility observation, document review of material safety data sheets and batch manufacturing records, and semi-structured interviews with production chemists and environmental health officers. The audit assesses atom economy in active pharmaceutical ingredient synthesis, solvent recovery and recycling programmes, reagent substitution strategies, catalytic versus stoichiometric reagent use, and energy consumption benchmarking. A green chemistry performance score is calculated and compared against global pharmaceutical industry benchmarks published in peer-reviewed literature. Gap analysis identifies priority areas for improvement and an action plan is proposed specifying cost-effective retrofitting options for existing unit operations. The study also evaluates the economic implications of green chemistry adoption in terms of reduced raw material costs, decreased waste disposal expenditure, and potential regulatory incentives. Findings are expected to demonstrate partial adoption of green chemistry principles with significant gaps in solvent management and waste minimisation. This professional practice-oriented study contributes to sustainable industrial chemistry management in the Nigerian pharmaceutical sector. Keywords: green chemistry, pharmaceutical manufacturing, Lagos, waste minimisation, sustainable production
