Application of Information Communication Technology in Academic Libraries: A Study of University of Ilorin

This study examined the application of information and communication technology in the delivery of library services at the University of Ilorin Library, Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Libraries globally are investing in ICT infrastructure to enhance access, improve catalogue search, automate circulation, and deliver digital services, yet the pace and depth of adoption vary considerably across Nigerian institutions. A descriptive survey design was adopted. Data were obtained from library staff and a sample of 350 library users through structured questionnaires supplemented by key informant interviews with library management. The study found that while the library had deployed an integrated library management system, automation was partial, with manual processes still used for serials management and inter-library loans. ICT application was constrained by erratic power supply, insufficient technical staff, and budgetary limitations on hardware procurement and software licensing. Users expressed satisfaction with the Online Public Access Catalogue but reported connectivity issues that disrupted electronic resource use. The study recommended investment in stable power supply infrastructure, the appointment of systems librarians, and the development of a phased ICT deployment roadmap aligned with institutional strategic plans.
