📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study examines the application of precision livestock farming technologies in Nigerian cattle ranching operations, assessing technical feasibility, economic viability, and adoption constraints. Precision livestock farming technologies including electronic identification, GPS tracking, automated weighing, and health monitoring sensors offer significant potential for improving management efficiency in large cattle operations. Nigeria's emerging commercial ranching sector, supported by the National Livestock Transformation Programme, represents a potential early adopter context, but specific technology assessment for Nigerian conditions is limited. This study evaluates precision livestock farming technology applications at three commercial cattle ranching operations in Niger, Kaduna, and Taraba States established under the NLTP framework. Technology performance, operational advantages, maintenance challenges, return on investment, and staff training requirements are assessed through six-month operational monitoring and economic analysis. Key informant interviews with 25 ranch managers and technology suppliers supplement the empirical assessment. Findings reveal that GPS tracking of cattle movements significantly improves range management efficiency, reducing search time by 68 percent in free-range environments. Electronic identification integrated with weigh platform records shows 28 percent improvement in individual animal performance monitoring accuracy. Health monitoring sensors detect fever events 24 hours before visible clinical signs in 74 percent of cases. Investment payback periods range from 2.8 to 4.5 years depending on ranch scale. The study recommends a phased PLF technology adoption roadmap for Nigerian commercial ranches and identifies staff training as the most critical implementation success factor.
