Assessing Urban Green Space Availability and Distribution in Enugu City

Urban green spaces provide vital ecosystem services in rapidly growing Nigerian cities, including heat regulation, storm water management, recreational amenity, and mental health benefits for residents, yet green space provision in many cities remains inadequate, inequitably distributed, and poorly maintained. This study assesses the availability and spatial distribution of urban green spaces in Enugu City, the capital of Enugu State in the South East geopolitical zone. Green space features including parks, recreational grounds, street trees, institutional grounds, and riparian corridors were identified and digitised from high-resolution Google Earth imagery and supplemented by field verification surveys conducted in 2023. Per capita green space availability was computed at ward level by combining green space area estimates with ward-level population data from the 2022 projected census figures. Questionnaire surveys administered to 320 residents across eight wards examined green space use patterns, perceived quality, accessibility, and resident satisfaction. Results indicate that Enugu City provides an average of 2.3 square metres of formal green space per capita, substantially below the WHO minimum recommended standard of 9 square metres per capita. Green space is disproportionately concentrated in GRA and Independence Layout districts serving higher-income residents, while high-density residential wards in Abakpa and Ogui New Layout have virtually no formal public green space within walkable distance. Recommendations include compulsory green space reservations in new development applications and phased retrofitting of degraded open spaces.
