Assessment of Invasive Alien Species Management Protocols in Ogun State Forest Reserves

Invasive alien species represent a growing ecological threat to Nigerian forest reserves, altering habitat structure and reducing native biodiversity. In Ogun State, within Nigeria's South West geopolitical zone, the absence of formal management protocols for invasive plants and animals in forest reserves has allowed invasive populations to expand unchecked, undermining decades of conservation investment. This study assesses existing management responses to invasive alien species in Olokemeji and Omo Forest Reserves and recommends a standardized management protocol framework. Data were collected through field surveys of invasive species distribution, interviews with 30 forestry officers and rangers, review of management plans, and benchmarking against IUCN-recommended best practices from comparable forest reserves in Ghana and Côte d'Ivoire. A comprehensive inventory of invasive plant and animal species was compiled for both reserves, documenting 18 plant species and four invasive animal species including the African giant snail and Indian house crow. Priority ranking of invasive species for management intervention was conducted using an impact-based scoring matrix incorporating ecological impact, spread potential, and management feasibility. Results identify Chromolaena odorata and Lantana camara as the highest-priority targets for immediate intervention. The study recommends the adoption of an integrated invasive species management protocol, allocation of dedicated annual control budgets, establishment of an early detection monitoring network, and development of a state invasive species database.
