Assessment of LNG Micro-Distribution Feasibility for Remote Communities in Taraba State

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) micro-distribution represents a promising strategy for extending gas supply to remote communities beyond the reach of conventional pipeline infrastructure. This study assesses the technical and economic feasibility of an LNG micro-distribution system designed to serve selected remote communities in Taraba State in northeastern Nigeria, where no pipeline gas infrastructure currently exists. The research employs a feasibility study methodology, incorporating community energy demand surveys, supply chain logistics analysis, and financial modelling of LNG trucking and satellite regasification scenarios. Communities studied include settlements in Karim-Lamido, Zing, and Gashaka LGAs, which are located more than 250 kilometres from the nearest gas pipeline. The study evaluates LNG production source options including the Bonny NLNG facility and emerging small-scale LNG plants, trucking route logistics, regasification unit specifications, and end-use applications including cooking fuel and power generation for health clinics and schools. Findings indicate that an LNG micro-distribution system serving 1,500 households across three communities is financially viable at a delivered gas price of between 450 and 600 Naira per standard cubic metre, competitive with current household firewood costs when health and environmental co-benefits are monetised. The study recommends pilot project implementation under the Rural Gas Programme of the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources and engagement with Taraba State Government for counterpart co-funding.
