📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Background: Leadership style adopted by nurse managers shapes the organisational culture of nursing units and directly influences staff performance, retention, and patient outcomes. Aim: This study assessed nurse managers' leadership styles and their influence on staff nurse performance at Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, South East Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive correlational design recruited 15 nurse managers and 90 staff nurses through total and stratified random sampling respectively. The Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire and a nurse performance appraisal tool were administered. Pearson's correlation and regression analysis were applied in SPSS version 26. Results: Transformational leadership was the most prevalent style, reported by 53% of managers. A positive correlation was found between transformational leadership and staff performance scores (r = 0.62, p < 0.001). Laissez-faire leadership was negatively associated with performance. Units managed transformationally reported better teamwork scores and lower absence rates. Conclusion: Transformational leadership is a significant determinant of nursing performance. Leadership development programmes focused on transformational competencies should be integrated into nurse manager training across Nigerian hospitals. Keywords: nurse managers, leadership style, transformational leadership, performance, Umuahia.
