Background: Population ageing in Nigeria is increasingly placing geriatric patients in contact with healthcare systems that remain inadequately prepared for their complex needs. Nurses' attitudes toward elderly patients have direct implications for care quality. Aim: This study assessed nurses' attitudes toward the care of elderly patients at University College Hospital, Ibadan, South West Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey involved 100 registered nurses recruited through stratified random sampling across internal medicine, orthopaedics, and surgical wards. The Kogan Attitudes Toward Old People Scale was adapted and administered. Data were analysed with SPSS version 27. Results: Approximately 55% of nurses held moderately positive attitudes, while 28% expressed negative perceptions including viewing geriatric care as unrewarding and burdensome. Nurses with formal geriatric nursing training demonstrated significantly more positive attitudes. Workload and inadequate training were identified as key contributing factors to negative dispositions. Conclusion: Structured gerontological nursing education and supportive staffing policies are necessary to cultivate positive nurse attitudes and improve care outcomes for elderly patients in Nigerian hospitals.
