Assessment of Physical Fitness Levels Among Secondary School Students in Enugu State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Physical fitness is a critical component of overall health and academic performance among adolescents, yet its systematic assessment in Nigerian secondary schools remains limited. This study evaluates the physical fitness levels of secondary school students in Enugu State, South East Nigeria, using standardized fitness test batteries including the 12-minute run, sit-and-reach flexibility test, push-up endurance test, and standing broad jump. A sample of 320 students drawn from eight government secondary schools across three local government areas participated in the study. Data were collected through direct physical assessment and analysed using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests to examine gender and age-related differences. Findings indicate that a significant proportion of students fall below nationally recommended fitness benchmarks, with male students outperforming female counterparts on cardiovascular endurance and muscular strength measures, while females demonstrate superior flexibility scores. Nutritional status, assessed through body mass index calculations, reveals an emerging overweight prevalence of 17 percent among the sampled population. Sedentary lifestyle patterns attributed to excessive screen time and reduced participation in after-school physical activity are identified as primary contributing factors. Recommendations include the institutionalisation of regular fitness testing within the school curriculum, training of physical education teachers in fitness assessment protocols, and the development of school-based exercise intervention programmes tailored to the adolescent population. This research provides baseline fitness data relevant to curriculum planning for secondary education in South East Nigeria.
