Assessment of the Role of Agricultural Extension Agents in Technology Dissemination Among Rice Farmers in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria

Agricultural extension remains a central mechanism for bridging the gap between research-generated technologies and smallholder farming practice. In Ebonyi State, a region with significant lowland rice production potential, the effectiveness of extension agents in disseminating improved technologies is critical to achieving sustainable productivity growth. This study assessed the role of extension agents in technology dissemination among rice farmers in Ebonyi State. A random sample of 96 rice farmers from four local government areas was interviewed using a structured questionnaire. Data collected covered farmer-extension contact frequency, technology awareness levels, and adoption outcomes. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were applied. Findings indicated that only 42 percent of surveyed farmers had received extension visits in the preceding twelve months, reflecting inadequate staffing ratios. However, among farmers with regular extension contact, awareness and adoption of improved rice varieties and fertiliser application practices were significantly higher. Radio broadcasts and community demonstration plots were identified as complementary and cost-effective dissemination pathways. The study recommends reviewing the extension agent-to-farmer ratio in Ebonyi State and harnessing information and communication technologies to expand outreach. Investments in extension agent capacity development and incentive structures are also urgently needed. These findings are relevant to the Ebonyi State Agricultural Development Programme and national extension reform dialogues.
