Assessment of Workplace Mental Health Policies in Selected Nigerian Banks in Lagos State, South West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

The banking sector in Nigeria is associated with high-stress working conditions, long hours, and intense performance pressure, yet formal workplace mental health policies remain inconsistently implemented. This study evaluates the nature, availability, and effectiveness of workplace mental health policies in selected commercial banks in Lagos State, South West Nigeria. A mixed-methods design will be employed, with quantitative data collected through structured questionnaires administered to 200 human resource managers and employees from eight banks, and qualitative data gathered through 15 key informant interviews with HR directors and occupational health officers. The Work and Well-Being Assessment (WWBA) will measure employee mental health status, and a policy assessment checklist will evaluate the adequacy of existing mental health frameworks. Content analysis will be applied to qualitative data. Recent reports from Nigeria's banking sector indicate that mental illness-related absenteeism is increasing, while organizational responses remain largely reactive and punitive. Findings will support the development of evidence-based workplace mental health policy frameworks for Nigerian financial institutions and provide guidance for the Central Bank of Nigeria's occupational health guidelines. Keywords: workplace mental health, banking sector, Lagos State, occupational health, policy assessment
