Availability of Instructional Materials and Teaching Effectiveness in Public Primary Schools in Plateau State

This study assesses the relationship between the availability of instructional materials and teaching effectiveness in public primary schools in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. Instructional materials, including textbooks, charts, manipulatives, and audiovisual aids, are essential tools that support meaningful learning and help teachers communicate concepts clearly across diverse learning styles. In many rural and semi-urban Plateau State schools, chronic shortages of these resources have been linked to poor teaching quality and low pupil engagement. A descriptive survey design was employed, collecting data from 150 primary school teachers across 20 schools in Jos North, Barkin Ladi, and Pankshin local government areas. An observation checklist documented available instructional materials in each school, while teacher effectiveness was assessed using a structured rating scale completed by head teachers and education officers. Pearson correlation and simple regression analysis were applied. Results reveal a significant positive relationship between instructional material availability and teaching effectiveness scores. Schools with adequate textbooks and visual aids showed significantly higher ratings for lesson clarity and learner engagement. The study concludes that material deprivation is a significant barrier to teaching effectiveness in Plateau State primary schools. It recommends that the Plateau State Universal Basic Education Board prioritise instructional material procurement in its annual budget and establish a maintenance and distribution system to ensure equitable access across all local government areas, with special attention to rural and conflict-affected communities.
