Barriers to Implementation of Building Information Modelling in Construction Firms in Abuja, FCT

Building Information Modelling (BIM) represents a transformative technology for construction project management, enabling integrated design, coordination, and delivery, yet its adoption in Nigerian construction remains nascent. This study identifies barriers to BIM implementation in construction firms in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory. A descriptive survey will recruit 180 architects, structural engineers, project managers, and quantity surveyors from 25 Abuja-based construction and consultancy firms through the Abuja chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Architects. A structured questionnaire will assess awareness levels, current BIM usage, and barriers across dimensions of cost, training, software infrastructure, industry culture, and client demand. Descriptive statistics and factor analysis will identify barrier clusters. Evidence from Nigerian construction literature highlights cost of BIM software, lack of skilled practitioners, and absence of BIM mandates from government clients as principal adoption barriers. This study will generate contemporary Abuja-specific data to support BIM advocacy campaigns by professional bodies and the FCT government.
