📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
Background: Continuous professional development (CPD) is a regulatory and ethical obligation for Nigerian nurses, yet systemic challenges in conflict-affected North East Nigeria significantly impede participation. Aim: This study investigated challenges of implementing CPD among nurses at general hospitals in Borno State. Methods: A descriptive qualitative design involving in-depth interviews with 30 purposively selected registered nurses and six nurse managers was adopted. Thematic analysis guided data interpretation. Results: Key themes included inadequate funding for CPD programmes, shortage of qualified facilitators, insecurity-related mobility restrictions, and absence of institutional CPD calendars. Nurses reported low organisational support for CPD leave and limited access to digital learning platforms. Despite these barriers, 73% of nurses expressed strong motivation for professional development. Conclusion: Structural and contextual barriers severely impede CPD implementation in conflict-affected Nigerian states. The study recommends government-funded mobile CPD units, digital learning subsidies, and hospital CPD budget allocations to support nurse professional development in challenging environments. Keywords: continuous professional development, nursing, Borno State, professional growth, challenges.
