Relationship Between Vocational Education and Poverty Alleviation in Rural Communities of Ekiti State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study explored the relationship between vocational education attainment and poverty alleviation in rural communities of Ekiti State, South West Nigeria. Rural poverty reduction strategies in Nigeria increasingly recognize vocational skills as a mechanism for expanding livelihood options beyond subsistence farming. A correlational survey design was used, with 280 rural household heads whose members had received vocational education from secondary schools or community training centres in the past five years. Household income data, employment status, and vocational certification records were collected through structured interviews. Results revealed a statistically significant positive correlation between vocational education attainment and household income, with vocational certificate holders earning on average 38 percent more than non-certified neighbors. Self-employment in tailoring, food processing, and carpentry was the dominant income pathway for vocational graduates. However, access to credit, equipment, and markets remained significant barriers to income maximization. The study recommends that the Ekiti State Government integrate vocational education with rural enterprise development programmes, provide micro-credit facilities to vocational graduates, and establish rural cooperative marketplaces for vocational entrepreneurs. These findings reinforce the evidence supporting vocational education as a poverty alleviation instrument in Nigeria's rural South West. Keywords: vocational education, poverty alleviation, Ekiti State, rural communities, livelihood.
