Cold Chain Logistics and the Distribution of Vaccines in Rural Communities of Zamfara State, North West Nigeria

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This research examines cold chain logistics challenges in the distribution of vaccines to rural communities in Zamfara State, North West Nigeria. Despite significant progress in immunisation programmes under the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, cold chain failures at the last mile continue to undermine vaccine potency and programme effectiveness in remote northern communities. The study adopts a descriptive field survey, combining structured questionnaires and direct observation of cold chain facilities across 20 primary health centres in three local government areas of Zamfara State. Key variables examined include cold storage equipment functionality, power supply reliability, temperature monitoring systems, trained personnel availability, and transport regularity from state stores to community health posts. Vaccine wastage rates and stock-out frequency serve as proxy indicators of cold chain performance. Data are analysed using descriptive statistics, frequency distributions, and thematic analysis of qualitative responses from health workers. The study references current literature on health supply chain resilience, solar-powered cold storage adoption, and community health logistics in sub-Saharan Africa. Findings are expected to reveal systemic gaps in storage infrastructure, human capacity, and distribution scheduling that require urgent intervention. Recommendations are addressed to the Zamfara State Ministry of Health, donor agencies, and logistics coordinators supporting immunisation programmes in Nigeria's North West geopolitical zone.
