Community Engagement and Its Impact on Vocational Education Development in Kwara State

This study explored the nature and impact of community engagement on vocational education development in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Community stakeholders, including local governments, traditional rulers, religious institutions, and parent bodies, play an essential role in supporting or constraining vocational education, yet their systematic engagement is rarely formalized in Nigerian school management practice. A mixed-methods survey design was employed, with quantitative data from 180 community leaders, school principals, and vocational teachers, and qualitative data from six focus group discussions in urban and rural communities across four local government areas. Findings showed that schools with active community engagement structures reported higher enrolment, better equipment, and stronger student retention. Community members contributed meaningfully to infrastructure donations, student recruitment outreach, and post-graduation employment facilitation. However, community engagement was often informal, tokenistic, and dependent on individual principal initiative rather than institutional policy. The study recommends that the Kwara State Government develop a Community-School Partnership Policy for vocational education, establish Community Vocational Education Committees in each local government area, and provide training for school administrators in stakeholder engagement. Traditional rulers and Islamic scholars should be formally incorporated as vocational education ambassadors. These findings offer a practical framework for community-driven vocational education development in Nigeria's North Central zone.
