📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW
This study constructs a culturally responsive pedagogy model specifically designed for vocational education delivery in northern Nigeria. Culturally responsive pedagogy theory posits that effective teaching must affirm, connect to, and build upon students cultural backgrounds, values, and prior knowledge. In northern Nigeria, vocational education frequently operates in cultural contexts characterised by distinct religious traditions, gender norms, language diversity, and community occupational identities that are poorly addressed by standard national curricula and generic teaching methods. This study employs a constructivist grounded theory methodology, gathering qualitative data through ethnographic observations in 15 vocational institutions across Kano, Sokoto, Maiduguri, Kastina, and Gombe, in-depth interviews with 40 vocational teachers, 20 community elders, and 30 students, and focus group discussions with vocational trade professionals. Constant comparative analysis and theoretical sampling guide model construction. The emergent model articulates principles, practices, and conditions for culturally responsive vocational pedagogy in northern Nigerian contexts, distinguishing domain-specific applications across trade areas. Theoretical contributions include a contextualised extension of Gay's culturally responsive teaching framework to vocational education in Muslim-majority northern Nigerian communities. Practical contributions include a teacher professional development curriculum aligned with the model. Recommendations address pre-service teacher education, curriculum reform, and institutional policy development. This study fills a significant gap in culturally responsive pedagogy research for vocational education in Nigeria. Keywords: culturally responsive pedagogy, vocational education, northern Nigeria, grounded theory, pedagogy model
