Corporate Environmental Responsibility in Offshore Oil Companies Operating in Nigeria

Corporate environmental responsibility in the offshore oil sector has evolved significantly in the context of growing investor scrutiny, international environmental frameworks, and community activism in Nigeria's oil-producing regions. This study examines the environmental responsibility performance of five major multinational and indigenous oil companies with active offshore production licences in Nigeria's Gulf of Guinea, focusing on the period 2019 to 2024. Performance is evaluated across five dimensions: environmental governance (policy commitment, management systems, board oversight), operational performance (spill frequency, flare intensity, discharge compliance), environmental monitoring and disclosure, community engagement in environmental management, and alignment with international environmental standards (IPIECA, ISO 14001, Global Reporting Initiative). Primary data are collected through analysis of sustainability and environmental performance reports published by selected companies, supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 30 environmental managers, NGO representatives, and government regulators. A scorecard methodology assigns standardised scores across evaluation dimensions, enabling cross-company comparison. Secondary data on spill records are drawn from the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency's national spill database and the Department of Petroleum Resources' compliance database. Findings are expected to reveal significant variation in disclosure quality and environmental management system maturity across companies, with indigenous companies demonstrating weaker reporting practices than multinational operators. Recommendations address mandatory sustainability reporting requirements and independent environmental audit obligations under revised petroleum regulations.
