Corruption Reporting in Nigerian Journalism: Barriers, Practices, and Impact

This study examines the barriers, practices, and impact of corruption reporting in Nigerian journalism, providing a comprehensive empirical analysis of how corruption is investigated and reported, what structural constraints shape reporting quality, and what outcomes anti-corruption journalism generates. Nigeria consistently ranks low on global corruption indices, and media-led accountability journalism is among the most important civil society mechanisms for combating corruption. This study employs a mixed-method approach combining a survey of 110 journalists with corruption reporting experience across all six geopolitical zones, in-depth interviews with 18 investigative journalists and editors specialising in corruption coverage, and a quantitative impact assessment tracking outcomes from 80 major corruption-related reports from 2020 to 2023. Findings reveal that corruption reporting faces five major structural barriers: source intimidation and witness protection absence, legal harassment through defamation suits, economic pressure from advertising withdrawal, limited access to public financial information despite FOI legislation, and editorial caution driven by ownership interests. Female corruption reporters report additional gender-specific risks. Reports targeting lower-level officials generate higher accountability response rates than those targeting political elites. Anti-corruption agency partnership with journalists improves evidence quality and prosecution rates. Reports published in both national English media and translated into major regional languages generate significantly larger public response. The study concludes that corruption reporting in Nigeria is valuable but systematically constrained and recommends legal aid funds for defamation defence, journalist source protection legislation, and EFCC-media partnership protocols.
