Media and Nation-Building in Post-Conflict Northern Nigeria: A Critical Analysis

This study critically analyses the role of media in contributing to or undermining nation-building processes in the post-conflict context of Northern Nigeria, with specific reference to the Borno-Adamawa-Yobe insurgency recovery period. Nation-building through media requires communication practices that foster shared identity, inclusive citizenship, inter-community reconciliation, and democratic participation, functions that are simultaneously most needed and most difficult to achieve in post-conflict societies. This study employs a critical discourse analysis methodology applied to a corpus of 180 media outputs (newspaper articles, radio programmes, and social media content) from northern Nigerian outlets from 2020 to 2023 during the reconstruction phase of the insurgency-affected areas. The corpus is supplemented by interviews with 22 journalists, media managers, and civil society activists working on post-conflict communication in the region. Findings reveal a contradictory media landscape in which some outlets produce peace journalism and reconciliation narratives that explicitly support nation-building goals, while others perpetuate divisive religious and ethnic framing that undermines social cohesion. State and federal government-controlled media show stronger nation-building framing but at the cost of critical accountability journalism. Independent media shows stronger accountability journalism but inconsistent peace journalism practice. Social media from the affected communities is the most complex environment, containing both reconciliation narratives and inflammatory content. The study concludes that media contribution to nation-building in Northern Nigeria is deeply ambivalent and recommends a structured peace journalism training programme for journalists covering the North East.
