Costume Design as Cultural Statement in Nigerian Theatre: Professional Approaches and Symbolism

This study examines professional costume design practices in Nigerian theatre, focusing on how costume serves as a vehicle for cultural statement and symbolic communication in production. Costume design is a discipline requiring both technical skill and deep cultural literacy, as costume choices in Nigerian theatre frequently engage with ethnic identity, historical period, social status, and spiritual symbolism. The research investigates how professional costume designers in Yoruba, Igbo, and Hausa cultural theatre traditions approach their craft and how they balance cultural authenticity with theatrical expressiveness. Data were gathered through interviews with professional costume designers, review of production costume plots and photographic documentation, and attendance at productions in Lagos, Enugu, and Kano. The study finds that costume design is frequently undervalued in Nigerian production budgets despite its significant contribution to the cultural legibility and aesthetic impact of performances. Designers working in culturally specific contexts often undertake extensive community research to ensure that costume choices are symbolically appropriate and historically informed. The research concludes that costume design in Nigerian theatre deserves recognition as both a professional discipline and a form of cultural scholarship.
