Cross-Cultural Communication Training and German Language Learning at the Nigerian Defence Academy

This study examines the integration of cross-cultural communication training with German language instruction at the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, in Kaduna State within the North West geopolitical zone. Military and security personnel increasingly require foreign language proficiency to support bilateral cooperation, peacekeeping missions, and international liaison functions. Germany maintains an active defence cooperation relationship with Nigeria, and German language competence among military personnel could enhance the effectiveness of this partnership. The study employs a qualitative case study design, drawing on documentary analysis of the Academy's language training curricula and semi-structured interviews with eight German language instructors and ten cadets who had received German language instruction. The analysis focuses on the extent to which cross-cultural awareness is embedded in language training and how cadets perceive the practical utility of German in their expected professional roles. Findings indicate that while German language instruction is well-structured grammatically, cross-cultural dimensions are inadequately incorporated, and cadets have limited awareness of German military culture and protocol. The study recommends a curriculum revision that integrates area studies and professional communication scenarios relevant to German-Nigerian defence cooperation.
