Design of a Microcontroller-Controlled Automatic Irrigation System for Rice Farms in Ebonyi State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

Background: Rice cultivation in Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria, is heavily reliant on manual irrigation practices that are labour-intensive and water-inefficient. Automated microcontroller-based irrigation systems can improve water use efficiency and crop yields. Aim: This project designed and implemented a microcontroller-controlled automatic irrigation system for rice farm application in Ebonyi State. Methods: Soil moisture sensors were placed at two root-zone depths in rice paddies. An Arduino Mega processed sensor inputs and activated a submersible pump relay when moisture fell below a set threshold. A real-time clock module scheduled night-time irrigation to minimise evaporation losses. Field trials were conducted over one rice growing season on a half-hectare plot. Results: The automated system reduced irrigation water use by 31% compared with the conventional flood irrigation plot, while achieving a 14% higher grain yield. Pump activation frequency averaged 2.8 times per day. Total system cost was NGN 38,000. Conclusion: The automatic irrigation system significantly improves water use efficiency and yield in rice farming. Commercial adoption is economically justified and the study recommends cooperative procurement to reduce per-farmer costs in Ebonyi rice farming communities. Keywords: automatic irrigation, microcontroller, rice farming, Ebonyi State, water efficiency.
