Developing an Original Theoretical Framework for African Classical Reception: The Case of Nigeria

The field of classical reception studies has developed substantial theoretical frameworks for understanding how ancient texts and cultural forms are adapted in later contexts, but these frameworks were developed primarily in relation to European and North American reception histories and inadequately account for the distinctive dynamics of African reception, where colonial mediation, cultural syncretism, and postcolonial agency all fundamentally shape the reception process. This study develops an original theoretical framework for African Classical Reception (ACR), using Nigeria as the primary site of framework development. The study employs a grounded theory methodology, drawing on thirty-six months of sustained engagement with Nigerian classical reception across literary, legal, educational, religious, and political domains. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 45 stakeholders including classical scholars, literary critics, lawyers, theologians, and educators across all six geopolitical zones. Documentary analysis of classical reception instances across genres complemented interview data. The ACR framework developed proposes five constitutive categories: colonial transmission (the medium through which classical material was introduced), indigenous negotiation (the process by which local cultural traditions selectively appropriate and transform classical forms), structural resonance (the identification of functional parallels between classical and indigenous traditions that facilitate reception), strategic deployment (the deliberate use of classical references for postcolonial argumentative purposes), and creative reconfiguration (the generative transformation of classical forms into new cultural products). The framework is validated through application to six case studies spanning literary, legal, and cultural reception contexts and provides original theoretical contribution to global reception studies methodology.
