Developing an Original Theoretical Framework for Cooperative Resilience in Post-Conflict Northern Nigeria

Cooperative societies in post-conflict northern Nigeria face a distinctive resilience challenge shaped by the intersection of institutional destruction, social capital erosion, economic disruption, and recovery programming, yet no theoretical framework specifically addresses cooperative resilience in this context. This study developed an original theoretical framework for cooperative resilience in post-conflict settings in northern Nigeria. A multi-stage theory-building methodology was employed, combining systematic review of resilience theory and cooperative economics literature, grounded theory research in Borno and Adamawa States, and expert validation. The systematic review analysed 62 publications at the intersection of organisational resilience theory, post-conflict economics, and cooperative management (2015 to 2024). Grounded theory fieldwork involved in-depth interviews with 48 cooperative leaders and members whose cooperatives had experienced conflict disruption and subsequent recovery, and 18 state cooperative department officials. Constant comparative analysis generated theory from data across 15 categories and 5 core theoretical constructs. The resulting Cooperative Post-Conflict Resilience Framework identifies social cohesion preservation, leadership continuity, capital reserve adequacy, external resource mobilisation capacity, and adaptive governance as the five core resilience dimensions. Original theoretical contributions include the concept of cooperative social memory (the preservation of cooperative values and norms across displacement) and a resilience trajectory typology classifying cooperative recovery pathways as adaptive, transformative, or failed. The framework was validated through expert consultation with seventeen cooperative resilience and post-conflict development specialists and provides an original contribution to cooperative theory applicable beyond northern Nigeria.
