Development of an Online Examination System for Polytechnic Students in Adamawa State

Examination malpractice and logistical challenges in paper-based assessments remain persistent problems in Nigerian polytechnics. This study develops an online examination system for polytechnic students in Adamawa State, North East Nigeria, piloted at Adamawa State Polytechnic, Yola. The system is built using PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL, with a browser lockdown feature that restricts access to external resources during examinations. The waterfall methodology is applied to ensure systematic documentation and testing before deployment. Features include question bank management with randomisation, timed assessments, auto-grading for objective questions, manual grading for essay components, result storage, and anti-cheating IP logging. The system was piloted across three departments over two examination cycles, involving 300 students and 18 lecturers. Results show that examination administration cost per student was reduced by 44 percent, and post-exam result release time shortened from two weeks to 48 hours. The study identifies reliable internet access and power supply as the primary constraints in Adamawa polytechnic campuses and recommends investment in ICT infrastructure ahead of broader deployment. Academic integrity outcomes were improved through randomised question sequencing and per-student question sets. This research adds to efforts to modernise assessment delivery in Nigeria's North East tertiary education sector.
