Diplomatic Protocol Management in Nigerian Foreign Missions: Challenges and Best Practices

This study examines the management of diplomatic protocol in Nigerian foreign missions, assessing how adherence to or deviation from established international protocol standards affects the effectiveness of Nigeria's bilateral diplomacy. Diplomatic protocol governs official ceremonies, state visits, and the conduct of diplomatic representation, and breaches can cause reputational and relational damage. Drawing on diplomatic studies and organisational management theory, this research investigates protocol management practices in selected Nigerian embassies in Europe and Asia from 2020 to 2024, identifying structural weaknesses, training deficits, and institutional reforms that may improve performance. The study employs a qualitative methodology, drawing on semi-structured interviews with career diplomats, analysis of Ministry of Foreign Affairs training documentation, and review of incident reports from selected missions. Attention is paid to the management of high-profile state visits, accreditation procedures, and the handling of official functions. Findings are expected to reveal that protocol breaches frequently arise from inadequate pre-posting training, staff shortages, and poorly resourced mission budgets rather than ignorance of protocol norms. The study contributes to the professional literature on diplomatic management and provides practical recommendations for revising Nigeria's diplomatic training curriculum and mission operational standards.
