Directing for Television Drama: Adapting Stage Direction Techniques to the Nigerian Broadcasting Environment

This study examines the professional practice of television drama direction in Nigeria, focusing on how stage direction techniques are adapted within the operational and aesthetic constraints of the Nigerian broadcasting environment. As Nigeria's broadcasting sector continues to expand with the proliferation of satellite channels and streaming platforms, demand for skilled television drama directors with backgrounds in live theatre has increased. The research investigates the technical, aesthetic, and institutional differences between stage and television directing and explores how theatre-trained directors navigate this transition in Nigerian broadcast institutions. Data were gathered through in-depth interviews with television drama directors at selected channels in Lagos, Ibadan, and Abuja, supplemented by observation of television drama production processes. The study finds that theatre-trained directors bring valuable strengths in actor management, dramatic structure, and thematic interpretation to television production, but frequently encounter challenges related to multi-camera coordination, continuity management, and adaptation to tight broadcast production schedules. The research concludes that a formal professional training pathway bridging stage and television direction is absent in the Nigerian media education landscape. It recommends the development of a professional development programme for stage directors transitioning to television.
