Effect of Cooperative Learning Strategy on Students Achievement in Woodwork Technology in Enugu State

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study examines the effect of the cooperative learning strategy on students achievement in woodwork technology in secondary schools in Enugu State, South East Nigeria. Traditional teacher-centred methods have been widely criticised for failing to engage students actively in practical technical subjects. Cooperative learning, which emphasises peer collaboration and shared responsibility, has shown promise in improving academic outcomes in similar contexts internationally. This study adopts a quasi-experimental design using pre-test and post-test control group methodology. A total of 120 senior secondary students across four schools in Enugu North and Igbo-Eze South local government areas are randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. The experimental group receives instruction using structured cooperative learning strategies, while the control group receives conventional instruction. Achievement tests are constructed from the Senior Secondary Certificate Examination woodwork syllabus and validated by vocational education experts. Data are analysed using analysis of covariance to control for pre-existing differences. The study predicts significantly higher post-test scores for the cooperative learning group. Findings are expected to contribute to the growing evidence base for active learning strategies in Nigerian technical education. The study recommends teacher training workshops focused on cooperative learning facilitation and its integration into technical subject lesson plans. Outcomes will assist curriculum developers and instructional supervisors in improving pedagogical approaches in woodwork and related vocational subjects.
