Effect of Home Economics Practical Classes on Academic Motivation of Students in Secondary Schools in Kebbi State

This study investigates the effect of Home Economics practical classes on the academic motivation of students in senior secondary schools in Kebbi State, North West Nigeria. Student motivation is a critical determinant of academic engagement and performance, and practical, hands-on learning experiences are widely recognised as powerful motivators in educational settings. Using a descriptive survey design, the study targets SS1 and SS2 students in ten public secondary schools in Birnin Kebbi and Yauri local government areas. Data were collected from 280 students using a validated motivation scale and structured questionnaire. Objectives include assessing students' motivation levels before and after practical Home Economics sessions, identifying the most motivating practical activities, and determining the role of teacher facilitation in sustaining motivation. Recent literature from North West Nigeria suggests that practical vocational education significantly enhances intrinsic motivation among adolescents in resource-limited communities. Data were analysed using paired t-test and ANOVA. The Self-Determination Theory anchors the study, emphasising the roles of autonomy, competence, and relatedness in sustaining motivation. Findings are anticipated to reveal significant increases in academic motivation attributable to practical Home Economics instruction. Recommendations target the Kebbi State Ministry of Education and school administrators to prioritise and resource practical Home Economics classes.
