Effect of Logistics Infrastructure on Export Performance of Agricultural Firms in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria

This study examines the effect of logistics infrastructure on the export performance of agricultural firms in Kwara State, North Central Nigeria. Kwara State produces significant volumes of cashew, soya beans, and cotton, with substantial export potential to European and Asian markets. However, the state's logistics infrastructure, encompassing road networks, storage facilities, and port access routes to Lagos, has been identified as a significant constraint on competitiveness and export volume. Using a descriptive survey design, structured questionnaires were administered to 65 export-oriented agricultural firms and commodity traders in Ilorin, Offa, and Lafiagi. The study evaluates infrastructure components including road quality, storage capacity, electricity reliability, and proximity to logistics hubs. Export performance is measured through export volume, frequency of exports per year, export revenue, and buyer retention rate. Multiple regression analysis is used to assess the predictive value of infrastructure quality on export performance. The study draws on recent trade logistics literature, including the World Bank's Logistics Performance Index framework applied to Nigerian export agriculture. Findings are expected to identify road quality and storage inadequacy as the primary infrastructure constraints limiting export growth. Recommendations are addressed to the Kwara State Government, the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture on targeted infrastructure investments to unlock agricultural export potential from the North Central zone.
