Effect of Supplier Relationship Management on Raw Material Availability in Food Processing Companies in Ogun State

This study investigates the effect of supplier relationship management (SRM) on raw material availability in food processing companies in Ogun State, South West Nigeria. Ogun State hosts a considerable number of food and agro-processing firms that depend on timely and consistent supply of raw materials to sustain production schedules. Disruptions in raw material supply have been linked to weak supplier relationships, poor communication, and inadequate long-term contracting. Using a descriptive survey design, data were gathered from 95 supply chain and procurement personnel across 12 food processing firms in the Sagamu, Agbara, and Ijebu Ode industrial clusters. The study examines four SRM dimensions: supplier communication frequency, joint problem-solving, contract formality, and supplier performance evaluation. Raw material availability is measured by stock-out frequency, lead time consistency, and production downtime attributed to supply gaps. Multiple regression analysis is used to determine the predictive strength of each SRM dimension on the availability outcome variable. The study contributes to practical knowledge on how Nigerian food manufacturers can leverage structured supplier relationships to stabilise their raw material pipelines. Findings are expected to highlight the value of formal supplier development programmes and performance-linked contracts in reducing production disruptions. Recommendations are directed at operations managers, procurement teams, and food sector industry associations in Ogun State.
