Effectiveness of Practical Teaching Methods in Vocational Subjects in Plateau State Senior Secondary Schools

📖 ABSTRACT/OVERVIEW

This study evaluated the effectiveness of practical teaching methods in vocational subjects in senior secondary schools in Plateau State, North Central Nigeria. Practical instruction is widely regarded as the cornerstone of vocational education, yet research suggests that many Nigerian schools rely predominantly on theoretical delivery due to resource constraints and examination pressure. Using a quasi-experimental design, 240 students in agricultural science and home economics were divided into experimental groups receiving structured practical instruction and control groups receiving conventional lecture-based teaching over a 12-week period. Post-test scores and skills assessment rubrics were used to measure learning outcomes. Results demonstrated significantly higher competency scores among students in the practical instruction groups, with a mean gain of 19.4 points compared to 7.2 in the control groups. Teacher observation logs also recorded higher student engagement and attendance rates in practical sessions. The study recommends that the Plateau State Secondary Schools Management Board mandate a minimum ratio of practical to theoretical instruction for all vocational subjects, develop teacher competency frameworks emphasizing hands-on pedagogical skills, and procure consumable materials to sustain practical teaching. Collaboration with local industries for field trip learning is also advised. These findings reinforce the evidence base for practice-centred vocational pedagogy across Nigeria's North Central schools.
