Empirical Study of the Environmental Consequences of Informal Urban Expansion in Kaduna Metropolitan Area

This study empirically examines the environmental consequences of informal residential and commercial expansion in the Kaduna Metropolitan Area, Kaduna State, North West Nigeria, quantifying the impacts on vegetation cover, drainage systems, water quality, and urban heat in areas that have expanded without planning permission or environmental assessment. Informal urban expansion is the dominant mode of spatial growth in Nigerian metropolitan areas, and its environmental consequences accumulate at a scale that has not been systematically measured. Multi-temporal remote sensing analysis using Landsat and Sentinel data from 2012 and 2022 maps formal and informal expansion patterns across the Kaduna Metropolitan boundary. Environmental impact indicators are measured in formally developed areas, informally developed areas, and undeveloped reference areas using a combination of satellite-derived indices and field measurements. Parameters include NDVI decline, impervious surface expansion, drainage channel condition, surface water turbidity at urban drainage outlets, and land surface temperature as an urban heat proxy. Field measurements and community interviews supplement the remote sensing analysis at twelve site locations. Results show that informal expansion areas exhibit significantly lower vegetation cover, higher land surface temperatures by an average of 3.8 degrees Celsius, and more degraded drainage channel conditions than formally developed areas of comparable age, controlling for density. Surface water quality at outlets draining informal areas is significantly worse than at formally developed area outlets for turbidity, BOD, and faecal coliform. Recommendations include retro-fitting environmental infrastructure to established informal areas and developing an environmental management standard for informal settlement upgrading programmes.
